Behind the Curtain: A Vein Doctor's Journey of Self-Improvement

Dr. Peter Ford and other vein specialists attending the HPS Conference.

Have you ever wondered how vein doctors improve their knowledge, increase their skills, and ensure they deliver cutting-edge technology to their patients?

As a vein doctor dedicated to providing exceptional care at Vascular Solutions in Charlotte, North Carolina, I recently had the privilege of attending an enlightening "roundtable" conference with my peers in Fort Worth, Texas. This event, coordinated by Health Performance Specialists (HPS), not only showcased the latest advancements in varicose vein treatment and venous disease management but also reinforced the power of community in our specialized field.

The HPS Community: Where Expertise Meets Camaraderie

As of August 2024, the HPS organization boasts over 75 members across multiple states in the US. We convene virtually each month and meet in person biannually. Since joining HPS four months ago, I've been incredibly excited to be part of this collaborative community of vein specialists.

What struck me most about this gathering was the genuine spirit of camaraderie. Everyone left their egos at the door, creating an atmosphere of open sharing and mutual support. It felt like I was in the right place, at the right time, surrounded by "my people" - fellow vein specialists who share the same passion for improving patient care.

Cutting-Edge Varicose Vein Treatments: Learning from the Best

The conference was a treasure trove of knowledge, with experts generously sharing their insights:

  1. Dr. Phillippi's masterclass on advanced foam sclerotherapy techniques
  2. Dr. Cunningham's invaluable tips on Varithena treatment protocols
  3. In-depth discussions on the Venclose device for great saphenous vein reflux
  4. Exploration of the Maven device for perforator vein treatment

These innovative approaches will allow us at Vascular Solutions to offer our Charlotte patients the most effective and least invasive varicose vein treatments available.

Beyond Varicose Veins: Unexpected Connections

Dr. Hayes provided a fascinating presentation on the relationship between restless leg syndrome and varicose veins or venous reflux. This kind of insight is crucial for providing comprehensive vein care and improving our patients' overall quality of life.

The Human Side of Vein Care: Memorable Personalities

One of the joys of these gatherings is meeting the remarkable individuals behind the expertise. Dr. Oswalt, a self-deprecating Texan with a heart of gold, not only delivered great presentations but also played chauffeur and tour guide for our group dinner. Who says Texans only wear cowboy hats?

The visionary leader of our crew, Dr. Chris Pittman from Tampa, Florida, deserves a special mention. His dedication to improving vein care is truly inspirational, and I'd give him "5-Stars" for leadership, initiative, and communication skills.

Fort Worth: The Perfect Backdrop for Collaboration

The choice of Fort Worth as our meeting place couldn't have been more fitting. As a first-time visitor, I was charmed by the city's understated cool "western" vibe. The kindness and down-to-earth nature of everyone I met perfectly mirrored the spirit of our conference. A big thank you to Scot for ensuring I got the full Fort Worth experience, including visits to the Stockyards and Billy Bob's!

The human connections formed during these gatherings are invaluable, reminding us that behind every medical advancement is a community of dedicated professionals working together to improve patient care.
