VenaSeal (TM) Q & A

What is VenaSeal?

VenaSeal is an advanced treatment for varicose veins and venous reflux, or chronic venous insufficiency, the problem that causes varicose veins. This new treatment uses an adhesive to close the damaged veins. By comparison, other procedures such as endovenous laser ablation rely on heat to collapse the vein.

How does VenaSeal work?

During your procedure, your Vascular Solutions provider makes a tiny incision in your leg and inserts the catheter into a blood vessel. Using ultrasound to see your veins and the catheter, they guide the device to the end of the damaged vein.

Then your provider slowly withdraws the catheter, releasing several drops of the adhesive. As the adhesive begins to bond with the vein wall, your provider pushes against your skin, placing gentle pressure on the treated area to close the vein.

Your procedure continues in the same manner, with your Vascular Solutions provider releasing several drops of adhesive and pushing to close the vein until they treat all the varicose veins. After removing the catheter, your provider places a bandage over the tiny incision, and your procedure is complete.

What happens to my veins after a VenaSeal treatment?

The innovative VenaSeal adhesive stays in your vein. Your body encloses the adhesive in scar tissue, which keeps the veins permanently closed.

Your body restores normal circulation by rerouting the blood flow to other healthy veins, and as a result, your venous reflux improves. Any symptoms caused by your varicose veins disappear, and complications such as leg ulcers can begin to heal.

Meanwhile, the treated veins return to their normal, small size. Though the veins are still there, your large, twisted, bulging varicose veins are gone, which means your legs look great again.

What benefits do I gain from VenaSeal?

VenaSeal offers several significant benefits that make your varicose vein treatment a safe experience:

Forget extensive anesthesia

Since the VenaSeal doesn’t use high temperatures, you don’t need a tumescent anesthetic that covers the length of the vein. That means you don’t need a bunch of needle sticks to inject the anesthesia. You only need one quick injection of a local anesthetic at the site where your provider inserts the catheter.

No chance for tissue injuries

Without heat, there’s no chance for an accidental injury.

Eliminate compression stockings

The adhesive holds the vein closed, so most patients won’t need to wear compression stockings.
